Das Cartoon Lounge ist Racist

There are two things you should be doing. One is reading The Cartoon Lounge section of the New Yorker Web site. The other is listening to “Combination Pizza Hut and Taco Bell” by Das Racist. Wait there’s a third: clicking at least one of the hyperlinks in the preceding two sentences. Seriously, I put them there for a reason. A fourth thing you probably should be doing is appreciating the hilarious title of this post.

I’ll give you a second.

Okay, great. Now, your assignment is about to get a lot easier. Farley Katz (No hyperlink this time. Hmm, now you’re starting to appreciate the hyperlinks. Yeah, now you’re starting to appreciate them real good.) decided to do a funny little thing about the song “Combination Pizza Hut and Taco Bell (Wallpaper. Remix) for the Cartoon Lounge. It’s over there if you want to get at it.

Sure, now that you mention it, I’ll be glad to embed the video for the song — right after the jump.

What’s that? When did I start listening to Das Racist? Oh, no big deal. Only IN JANUARY! Almost SEVEN MONTHS AGO! Wow. Talk about cool. This is exactly what I was talking about in my last post. Pathetic.

Evaluate yourself

There comes a time in every Hornblower’s life when he (there are no female Hornblowers) must examine his life, and his reasons for Web logging. I do believe that my purpose with this Web log is to convince my self that I’m really cool, while at the same time (and this is crucial) making people think to themselves, “Hey, this Hornblower guy is actually really not cool. All he does is write this damn inconsequential Web log. Doesn’t he have a job, or friends — besides the made-up readers of his Web log, anyway? And he usually ends up killing those guys, anyway. And the way he talks to them — it’s like he doesn’t know what human interactions are supposed to be like. It’s pretty disturbing. If I met this man, I would flee for the highlands. I hope he finds help, or the Lord, or help in the Lord. We are all in danger.”

If I were a recording artist signed to a major label, I would just tell my fans to download my music for free and mail me $2.

Actually, I’d probably ask them to send me a ham sandwich, too. For laughs, duh!

Paula Abdul Update

“You all never seize to amaze me.” — via @PaulaAbdul

Maybe there is something to this Twitter thing, if it allows for gems like that one. At least now we know that account truly is, as advertised, “The Real Paula Abdul.”

I’m sure she meant it as a compliment to her fans, but here’s how I interpret it: a pirate mother is complaining to her sons that nowadays they only seize merchant ships for their own benefit, whereas they used to do it to try to win their mother’s love and approval. A little bit of a Freudian, Oedipal element going on there. D.H. Lawrence would probably do great things with Paula’s ramblings. A Rocking-Horse Winner for our times, perhaps?

Paula Abdul says she’s out city

So, no more Paula Abdul on American Idol. Guess who won’t be watching the show anymore? If you guessed Hornblower, then you’re a damn fool, cos of course I never watched that show. Oh, wait. I did. For three episodes of season six, I watched only the performances by Melinda Doolittle, who was awfully good. Unfortunately for her and decency’s (not Decency) sake — though not, I’m sure, for AI’s ratings — Ms Doolittle was voted off, no doubt for looking a little too much like Princess Fiona (post-transogrification (see what I did there, with that word?)). Not to mention Lilo, from Lilo & Stitch (side note: I cannot imagine what kind of vandalism would cause the Lilo & Stitch Wikipedia page to have to be locked. These are troubling times, indeed). She also looks like my ex-girlfriend’s ex-roommate, but I’m not going to link to a picture of her. Anyway, when Melinda got the boot, that should have been Paula’s cue to follow suit out the door and start her own show — Paula’s Dreamland of Wonderflowers and Handcrafted Doubloons.

She didn’t, though, and look where she landed. In hot water. Big surprise. So she was only offered ten million dollars for next season? And Simon gets ten times that? Sounds like the man wins again. Did you hear about the other part of Simon’s contract? How everyone has to buy him a bottle of egg nog for the first day of Spring? That was apparently the last straw for Ms Abdul. She had lobbied 19 Entertainment for the right to buy him, like, anisette or something, but to no avail. So she bopped.

What next for Ms Abdul? Word is, she’s got an album due soon. What you didn’t know, though, is that it’s a collaboration with Lenny Bruce — from beyond the grave! Spoken-word shit! Manipulated tapes, looped samples, and Paula and Lenny having conversations over the whole thing. Jeff Lynne producing. Keep your eyes peeled, readers.

People are talking

Readers 1 & 2 are deceased, but I happened upon some others who have gallantly taken their place. A dialogue, then.

Reader One: I don’t know about these links Hornblower keeps posting. I just want to read Tin Speaker on Tin Speaker. Is that so much too ask?

Reader Two: This is like the time my father told me that when we used to have steak for dinner, it was really just old boots. Old boots and Béarnaise sauce.

Reader One: I don’t see how that situation could be in any way like this one.

Reader Two: You wouldn’t understand, Reader One. Your heart is cold with the ice of hatred and mistrust.

Hornblower: I invented ice.

Readers One & Two: Hornblower!

It’s been a while since my last concert review that was actually hosted here. I’m sure you miss it. I know I do. We all do. It’s time for a return to form, of sorts. Yeah, I know this concert was a while ago. But don’t worry, because this review is brand new! Lovely. Just lovely.

Go on over and observe some words on the subject of an event. Words I have written, words ye shall perhaps read. The event was a benefit for the Tenement Street Workshop artist collective. There was wine, and it was on a roof. What are you waiting for? Get over there.

What did I do today?

I wrote, friends. I wrote, and I write. I ate and I judged and I remain in your strictest confidence. Sometimes life’s pleasures are simple — just this evening, I marvelled at the beauty of using an ice cream scooper. After months of struggling not to deform my spoons in a mighty effort to use but simple silverware for purposes far beyond its intended function, the easy glide of the heavy tool through pistachio ice cream was a burden lifted, a gift bestowed.
