Mogwai et The Twilight Sad at Music Hall of Williamsburg – 28 April 2009

Collected thoughts to come; at present, I will leave you with the set list from each band, along with just some things I’ve written.

The new Twilight Sad album is going to be great, I think. While the first song of their set didn’t thrill me, the other new songs rather did (and of course the older ones did, too). I’m not sure how to decipher this set list, but Hit Single is That Summer, At Home I Had Become The Invisible Boy and one of them (Sheep Dug, maybe) is Cold Days From The Birdhouse. I think they played one more off of the début, too, but I can’t recall what it was.

Mogwai’s set list is thankfully less difficult to interpret. This is probably of no interest to anyone, but I just want to say that I was really hoping they would play Auto Rock. A few weeks ago, I put on Mr Beast, and for some reason Auto Rock got me really excited for this concert. When they were playing Friend Of The Night I really was hoping that Auto Rock would come soon — I think it was the piano that made me think of it. Then they launched into it! Man oh man, talk about coolio! Super fun times. The feedback squall at the end of We’re No Here was pretty excellent, too. And Batcat is definitely a great live cut off the new record. Too bad we didn’t get My Father My King, but the set list was pretty great, so no complaints from me, no sir. I’m glad I didn’t have earplugs, totally would have ruined the show. It’s ‘cos I’m a super tough guy, and earplugs are for little baby guys. P.S. what’s with the misspellings, am I right? Jim Morisson? Aurorock? I Love You? Who’s writing these things, Dan Quayle?

Incidentally, (thanks to Josh for reminding me that this is kind of basic information to include) The Twilight Sad went on at around 21h05 and played until about 21h45, and Mogwai started playing at 22h20 and finished the encore at 23h50. Very solid 90-minute set.
